X-edge

animated black mage
I was trolling through some upcoming game releases, and came across something called "X-Edge". Grid style RPG for PS3, coming to the US...yada yada yada...

Playable Characters: Etona/Etna from Disgaea... along with a Prinny. Nice to see a little coverage outside the Disgaea universe (I'm giving D3 another shot. I can wrap my head around this. I know I can)

A few from the Atelier series (which I admit I know nothing about)

Oh, and Morrigan, Felicia, Lilith, and Dimitri from Darkstalkers.

*needle-skipping-on-record-sound*

Wait...what?

Its got that retro look to it, which I don't mind.

And it gets released in North America in late march.

If a game like that can get released here... is it still hoping against hope to have a next-gen Super Robot Wars ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Robot_Wars ) game in NA eventually?

That's probably getting my hopes up.

I got excited watching the first video, but the second one with the gameplay and midget characters?> :(

ah well, should be fun anyway. I think I'll go back to playing my Geist, now *slinks away*

seriously though, should be interesting to play at least once, I'll have to rent it for my friend who has the PS3.

Yay Etna. :D

My only question is, why is it that these "cross over" games seem to always have such disproportionately small characters in comparison to most fighting games out there nowadays? Or is it just me?

As for Super Robot Wars, I know little about it, but I couldn't help but notice that if you go here and look at their projects page, that phrase seems to come up an awful lot.

Incidentally, I found this page because I had been reading Dresden Codak, then wiki'ed "Laplace's Demon," then somehow discovered after that that there was a Japanese RPG of that name, which led me to the link I just gave. :)

Ha! Nice... they're trying to do a fan translation of one of the early versions. I hope they're successful, and I hope I've got an emulator that will play it if so.

That's a good question on the character size. I don't know... then again I never much understood the concept of chibis in the first place.

See, that's just it: there is no reason why one can't have chibi-proportioned characters and still have them large enough that people don't need a magnifying glass to see the character. And most of these games at least as far as I can tell don't even have the characters chibi-styled, really (i.e. 2-3 heads tall instead of the normal 6-8 heads tall) anyway, they're just small sprites.

Which in this day and age of video procesing power, seems extra odd. Maybe there's some sort of specific school of design churning these people out?

If so we need to hunt it down and apply the molotovs?

Nice to see Lilith getting screen time, she doesn't get enough of that

Cross Edge... why does that sound familiar-- OH DUR.

Poor troll-thingy, never even got a hit in.

It'd be all down for a Darkstalkers-themed RPG with some nice high-res Odin Sphere/Guilty Gear XX-style character art.. but the chibis make it a no-starter for me, I can never seem to get past that art sytel.
